Hi there! May I compliment you on either your excellent taste in music or your willingness to try something new and create something for it, or both? In any case, I’m really looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I don’t expect you to treat every line of the song/frame of the video as canon the way you might for a book or TV show. If you want to do a close reading of the text, that’s cool! If some phrase or image or mood from the song or video suggests a picture or a story to you, then run with that and don’t worry too much about contradicting or fitting the rest of the canon in around it--and especially don’t worry about the prompts in this letter, which are really just there to give you ideas in case you’re stuck.

However, I do have a few Do Not Wants:

DNW (general):

-Long fic. Anything more than about 5000 words or so and I start getting anxious about reading and commenting in a timely fashion while still giving the story the attention it deserves, so I’d just rather you didn’t.
-Purely introspective stories with no action or character interaction
-Choose-Your-Own-Adventure/interactive/game-style fic
-Body image issues. I don’t mind brief mentions, but please don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on a character hating their body.
-It-was-only-a-dream type endings
-Torture for information (torture for fun/religious ritual/to enforce compliance is fine)/violent interrogation methods

DNW (smut):

-Sounding
-Infantilization
-That thing where one or more of the people involved doesn’t know what sex is or realize they’re having it
-Religion kink--like, using religious paraphernalia as sex toys, religious garb acting as fetish wear, or kinking on breaking religious vows of chastity. Sex with gods, devils, demons, or while being a god is okay and even great though.
-One partner calling out another’s name during orgasm

General likes (fic): I really like all kinds of fic, from silly fluff, action and adventures and worldbuilding to smut and hurt/comfort. Feel free to take it darker, too: violence, character death, betrayal, consent issues sexual and otherwise, bad things happening to characters I like AND characters I like doing bad things. I’m open to different POVs and tenses, and unusual fic formats like poetry and epistolary/documentary fic. In terms of romance and/or sex, I like any number of participants (as long as there are few enough that you can keep track of all the anatomy) and any gender combination. In general, I'm open to alternate gender interpretations of characters in the songs/videos.

A brief and really not exhaustive list of story elements I especially like: Comfort after a nightmare, self-sacrifice, loyalty and trust issues, elections, platonic bed-sharing, hugs, language geekery, communication issues, breakups (either the kind where the original relationship is eventually patched up, or where the people involved manage to forge a different but still mutually satisfactory type of relationship afterward, or where nothing is okay again and everything hurts), ethical dilemmas, food porn and food preparation, parenting/childcare, exploration of canon-appropriate religious themes.

General likes (art): Bright palettes with jewel tones, especially turquoise and rose, but also monochrome with lots of shading. Curves, soft bellies and big noses; also, hair. The kind of character portrait where a lot of thought has gone into details of clothing, hairstyle, etc even if nothing in particular is happening. Loose sketchy comick-y things that illustrate a character moment or interaction. Hair-touching, face-touching, hand kissing, forehead kissing, hugs from behind. I also like things that incorporate text and images in various ways, like calligraphy, comics, maps and diagrams, and I’m really fond of watercolors and Art Nouveau-inspired stylings.

If you want to make me smut, here are a few of my (many) favorite kinks: D/s dynamics, informal kink negotiation that feels true to the dynamic of those particular characters (although under-negotiated kink or the assumption that the negotiation has taken place offscreen are also a-ok), magic/superpowers/highly advanced technology or whatever unique features of the setting or characters being used for sexual purposes, improvised restraints and sex toys, blades, slicing/tearing off clothes, fingers in mouths, loyalty kink, trust kink, praise kink--especially the kind where the praised party is somewhat reluctant or embarrassed to accept the praise (creepy praise kink like e.g. in scenario where a rapist praises their victim for being good while threatening them is also great), one or more participants not getting off during the scene but enjoying it anyway, semi-public or outdoor sex, awkward sex, situations where different participants have different understandings of what’s going on (as in, A thinks the sex is consensual but B is actually mind-controlled, or A is putting on a show for C, who unbeknownst to B is watching the whole thing, or A thinks it’s a casual hookup but B is in love and afraid to mention it because they don’t want to ruin what they’ve got, or whatever.) Crossovers with outside fandoms aren't encouraged in this exchange, but if you wanted to cross over two or more of the songs I'm requesting, I wouldn't mind at all.

Alibi - Dessa (Song) youtube | lyrics

I'm intrigued by the family relationship of the narrator and the interlocutor: are they biological family? Did they grow up together? What's their shared history like, and how did they end up on different paths? I also want to know what, exactly, the interlocutor needs an alibi for. One possibility is that the narrator might be planning on killing the interlocutor's no-good lover before the lover can involve, implicate, or hurt them further, and I'd like to see how that plays out. Is the interlocutor aware of the narrator's plans? Will they try to stop the narrator? If forced to choose between their lover and the narrator, what will they do?

Black Swan - Rhiannon Giddens (Song) youtube | lyrics

I love the creepy sound and atmosphere of this song, and I’d love art or a story that captures it. The nature of all the characters is so mysterious: the narrator, their lover, the sun, moon, and stars, the black wave, and the black swan itself. I’m intrigued by the idea that the ring, meant to bind the lovers together, ended up driving them apart, and I’d love to read about the narrator’s quest to be reunited with their lover, whether or not it’s ultimately successful.

Build Me Up From Bones - Sarah Jarosz (Song) youtube | lyrics

This is a love song between a twisted mockery of life and the necromancer who reanimated them, right? I’d love something that captures both the aching tenderness of it and the inherent horror behind the premise. Were the necromancer and the undead creature lovers in a previous life, and the necromancer refused to give them up after their death? Or is it more of a Pygmalion and Galatea situation, where the undead is a new person created to the necromancer’s specifications? Give me all the intense devotion and us-against-the-world (with torches and pitchforks) please!

Daydreaming - Scenic Route to Alaska (Music Video) youtube with lyrics in the description

There are so many possibilities of what could be happening here--is the protagonist a clone? In a time loop? The victim of a mad science experiment? Caught in a simulation? Whatever it is, their disorientation and terror come through really strongly and I’d love a story or art that captured some of that feeling. I’d also like to know what changes in circumstance cause some versions of the protagonist to be so hostile and violent, others apparently friendly, and still others just trying to muddle through the best they can.

Castles! Swords and axes! Evil kings and ragtag bands of forest outlaws! Magical musical instruments! Maybe a princess who joins the rebels secretly, and/or a destined hero? This video has all the cheesy high fantasy vibes, and I am here for it, whether played straight or given some subversive twist.

Mean Well - Dear Reader (Music Video) youtube | lyrics

The lyrics suggest someone suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, or an experiment of Mad Science abandoned by their creator. I really dig the old-timey monster-movie aesthetic of the video, and the juxtaposition of the creepy and the mundane; the jerky and repetitive images might hint at the narrator being somehow unglued in time, stuck in a time loop or plagued by visions of the future/past? I'm interested in the relationship between the narrator and the individual they're addressing, and also about the people/other creatures attached to the "eyes everywhere" and if, in fact, they mean well.

The Mountain - Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer (Song) youtube | lyrics

The narrator of this song, born into mundane circumstances, transcends them through epic journeys, becoming immortal or even divine—at the cost of becoming alienated from the ordinary world, and perhaps dying over and over in various mythic ways. Where do their journeys take them? What strange people do they meet and lose along the way? And what about the mountain, their constant pursuer and preoccupation?

Is the narrator a driver, and the interlocutor some sort of urban-legend supernatural hitchhiker? Or the other way around? "I am not the only traveler / Who has not repaid his debt"--I'm intrigued by the implication that the narrator has incurred some sort of debt that they haven't been able to repay, that this is perhaps the source of their supernatural problems, and that this is a story that plays itself out over and over. And now the narrator is seeking to undo the whole thing by traveling back in time and telling their younger self not to do it--will it work? Will they get stuck in a time loop, forever causing the thing that they're trying to prevent, or will they find some way to break free? Is a happy ending possible for either the narrator or interlocutor, or perhaps even both?

Oleander - Sarah Harmer (Song) youtube | lyrics

Is the narrator of this song singing to a woman, or to a houseplant? If you just look at the words, it might be a houseplant--but it's a houseplant she's got weirdly intense feelings towards. I like to think that this is the story of a human woman and her nature-spirit ex-girlfriend who she would like to get back together with. I like the sense that the narrator has realized and learned from the mistakes that she made the first time around, and I would be interested in either a happy or bittersweet ending.

Sweet Jezebel - Mean Mary (Song) youtube | lyrics

I am here for hot woman-on-demonic-guitar action, although if you wanted to give Jezebel an alternate humanoid form for smut purposes, that would be cool too. Shipping aside, I'm wondering about Jezebel's point of view on this--how does she feel about being a temptation, to be used and heroically cast aside? What's her relationship with the mysterious Devil-like stranger? Like I said above, I'm not really interested in an interpretation where these events are nothing but a hallucination--even if the narrator's life seemingly picks up where it left off, I'd like to see some indication that the events of the song are real on some level, and that the narrator and Jezebel made some kind of lasting impression on each other, even if they never see each other again. Alternatively, I'd be intrigued by a scenario where they were somehow reunited, for better or for worse.

So uh assignments went out a while ago, huh. I'm really sorry about this, assigned creator!

Anyway, to reiterate what I said in the placeholder, a) the prompts on my signup are just ideas in case you get stuck and don't have any of your own, but if you do have other ideas, I'm totally fine with anything that doesn't contradict my DNWs, and b) I know some of my prompts are longer or more detailed than others, but that doesn't mean I want the shorter ones any less! I will really be thrilled with any of the relationships I requested. Also, c) I requested art for some of these relationships and not others, not because I don't want art for the ones I didn't request art for, but just because I didn't want to come up with prompts if I didn't already have them ready to go. Art treats are always welcome in any case.

Hylla & Reyna

Please write anything from Hylla and Reyna’s backstory! Their childhood in Puerto Rico, how they found Circe’s island and started working for her, fighting pirates together. How and why did they come to part ways? Alternatively, what does their relationship look like post-canon? Do they manage to recover their closeness, or work together reluctantly or otherwise?

Hylla/Kinzie

I ship Hylla with her right-hand warrior Kinzie. Since we never saw Kinzie's body, I'd like a soft AU where she's still alive, or something set before Blood of Olympus, or even tragic afterlife stuff-whichever direction you'd like to take it. I'd love to see loyalty kink with them , or just plain kink. I like the idea that Kinzie, who can be aggressively flirty with guys, always comes home to Hylla--or even brings the guys home to Hylla to share. (If you do decided to go this route, please use whatever other characters strike your fancy in this scenario, or OCs--it's all good!)

Lou Ellen & Alabaster

Lou Ellen and Alabaster don’t have a relationship in the books, but I wonder what their relationship might have been. If Lou Ellen fought on the Titans’ side in the Titan war, she must have fought under Alabaster’s command. Was she his loyal lieutenant? Was it hard for her to accept the amnesty on behalf of the rest of Hecate’s children and not him? Might she have kept in touch with him illicitly afterwards? If she fought with the Hermes cabin and the rest of Camp Half-Blood, how does that affect her relationship with her siblings, most of whom fought for the Titans--does she see Alabaster as a traitor, or does being the head counselor for the kids who fought under him give her a wider perspective? If he runs into something that he and his ghost sidekick can’t handle on their own, what would it take to get him to swallow his stubbornness and ask her for help?

Lou Ellen/Miranda

I ship Lou Ellen with Miranda Gardiner based on their like two lines of interaction in The Lost Hero, and despite the fact that we know basically nothing about Miranda. So if you want to write me anything with them I’d be thrilled. How do they get together--was it a sweet summer camp romance, or did they first meet as honorable (or less-than-honorable) enemies on the battlefield? Sparring that leads to kissing would be great, as would sexy uses of their powers: illusions, transformations, vine-tentacles, sex pollen?

Chronicles of the Kencyrath

Brenwyr & Brant, Brenwyr/Aerulan & Brant

How did they first discover that Brant was immune to Brenwyr’s ill-wishing? We know that Brenwyr used to borrow Brant’s clothes, so something with that would be interesting, especially if Brant sometimes borrowed Brenwyr’s in return. (I would especially love to see this as art--tiny Brenwyr, already dressed in Brant’s outfit, lacing him into one of her dresses would be simultaneously adorable and heartbreaking because we know what eventually happens with that.) Speaking of which, something about their mother’s death and its fallout would be great--did Brant ever blame himself for his part in the events? Did he forgive Brenwyr or believe it wasn’t her fault right away, or did that take time, and if so, how did they eventually reconcile? Or else something with the courtship of Aerulan--Brenwyr confessing her feelings to Brant, Brant deciding to make an offer for Aerulan, the two of them working together to meet Ganth’s price for her contract. Did Brant ever meet Aerulan himself, and what did they make of each other? Maybe Brant trying to comfort Brenwyr after Aerulan’s death. Or a slice of life, showing how they work together as lord and matriarch.

Lyra & Graykin

Did Lyra and Graykin ever have a childhood together? How did Lyra come to be given Graykin as a servant, and how did she come to give him the name that she gave him? (And what was he called before?) When they’re first introduced, Lyra dislikes and distrusts Graykin because he spies on her--presumably for Caldane. I’d love to see some background on that, what he reported about her and how she found out. Speaking of Lyra finding things out, when and how does she learn that Graykin is her brother, and how does it change their relationship? I’d also like to see their shared loyalty/affection/whatever for Jame helping overcome their past antagonism. For art, it’d be cool (and bittersweet, because they’re growing up in Caldane’s household after all) to see them as little kids? The scene with Graykin and Lyra and Cattila all sitting on top of each other in Cattila’s litter would make a pretty awesome visual too.

Queen's Thief

Eugenides the God & Hephestia

Mythological bros! Did Eugenides ever steal anything else for--or from--Hephestia? Did Hephestia ever manage to protect Eugenides from the justified wrath of the other gods without the appearance of favoritism? It’s hard not to picture Hephestia and Eugenides’ relationship as being something like Eddis and Gen’s, so--was Hephestia ever tempted to shove Eugenides off a high place? Did Eugenides ever do something in Hephestia’s service that she really would rather he hadn't? Alternatively, if you want, something that shows how Hephestia and Eugenides are really not like Eddis and Gen at all. Finally, it would be really cool to see in-universe religious art of them, maybe in an Archaic Greek or Renaissance-influenced style.

Eugenides & Stenides

Something from their childhood--maybe an incident where Eugenides helped Stenides pursue his interest in clockwork despite the opposition of their family? Maybe a story with their mom, or them dealing with her death. In The Queen of Attolia, we see that Gen has one of Stenides’ watches--when did he make it, and when did he give it to Gen, and does it have any special features? What does Stenides think of Gen’s marriage? Under what circumstances might Gen, as king, need Stenides’ help? (If you're also a fan of The Goblin Emperor, I had this idea where they somehow exist in the same universe, and Gen has heard that the emperor of the Elflands is fascinated by clockwork …) For art, I'd love a portrait of the two of them with the tools of their respective trades, or Stenides working and Gen making a nuisance of himself.

Eddis/The Magus, Sophos/The Magus, Sophos/Eddis/The Magus

I would love any combination of these. (I also like Eddis/Sophos without the Magus, but that's not what I'm asking for here--although if you're writing something with more than one scene I wouldn't mind a romantic or sexy scene or two when it's just Eddis and Sophos as long as the Magus gets his share at some point.) Sophos and the Magus finding comfort with each other when they're fugitives on the road, or having to pretend to be a couple at some point during that time. The Magus giving Sophos lessons in diplomacy or whatever that turn into something more. The Magus trying to win Eddis for his king only to found out that he's won her for himself instead--or has she won him? Eddis amusing herself with her favorite prisoner. The Magus out for a walk with Sophos and/or Eddis looking for new and interesting plants only to run into sex pollen. Swapping mythological love stories that are barely-veiled allegories for their own relationships. Eddis and the Magus coaching nervous virgin Sophos through his wedding night. For art, three-way kisses or snuggles would be great, and anything with a floral or botanical theme, combining the Magus' love of plants with his love of his king and queen.

Chanur Series

Py/Khym, Crew of the Pride/Khym

Anything with Py and Khym on the Pride, trying to figure out how things are supposed to work now. Khym bringing out his legal skills, or his being fucking huge skills, or working on his culinary skills, and Pyanfar being all captainly and trusting him to get stuff done, them saving each other in exciting adventures or chilling together in more domestic moments. Or if you want to write backstory about their earlier married life, how they balanced Khym’s role as Lord Mahn and Pyanfar’s career in space, whether they found ways to work together even then. Something with their kids before that went to hell, or showing how that all went to hell?

Alternatively, I would love to get something smuttier for them as well! Canon is pretty quiet on how exactly hani sex works (although they are sort of roughly based on lions) so feel free to throw in whatever wild ideas you might have. And--okay. So you know that bit where Pyanfar and Khym are snuggling in bed and Pyanfar is like, “Hey, how would you feel about fucking the whole crew?” Make that happen for me and I will love you forever. (Please include Tully if you’re so inclined! But not Hilfy, because Khym feels weird about that.)

Py & Skkukuk

I’d love to see Skkukuk’s take on any of the events of the books, his initial reaction to being foisted on Pyanfar and how his feelings towards her change and his loyalty develops. I just want aaaaall the platonic loyalty kink for them. I’d love to see them trying to understand each other's culture and biology in order to better fulfill the obligations they feel they have towards each other--I’d particularly like to see Pyanfar sacrificing her own best interests for Skkukuk’s sake, or publicly claiming him when it would be more convenient not to. Or else Skkukuk accomplishing something beyond all reason and expectation for Py.

Vorkosigan Saga

Kareen Koudelka/Mark Vorkosigan/Raven Durona

Kareen and Mark have a mutual option, but no one ever said it was an exclusive option, did they? I’d love to see them take their business association with Raven in a more intimate direction. Raven’s combination of curiosity, cynicism, and chill would probably equip him to deal with Mark’s issues and also what’s left of Kareen’s Barrayaran upbringing without too many problems. They could have a lot of fun together, and Mark and Kareen deserve all the pretty boys.

Raven Durona/Armsman Roic

THESE DORKS OK. I really loved their sections in Cryoburn, and would love to see more banter, spy shenanigans, and makeouts between them. Roic needs to expand his horizons! Roic's earnest grumpiness and Raven's cheerful cynicism are like chocolate and peanut butter.

Terrence Cee/Ethan Urquhart

I’d love to read about their Betan adventures before they get back to Athos, or about Terrence adjusting to life on Athos. If you’d like to go the farther-future route, write me a story about what happens when Ethan and Terrence are grandfathers and their crimes come to light when the first telepaths start cropping up, or about Galactic telepaths coming to seek asylum on Athos? Or if you want to write something sexier, I’d love something about their first time, or telepathic sex, or hurt/comfort either of the angsty, dealing-with-Terrence’s-traumatic-past variety, or the fluffy, Terrence-takes-care-of-Ethan-when-he-has-a-cold variety.

Lilly Durona & Georish Stauber

Something from their youth together, escaping from Baron Ryoval, and the origins of their Deal? Or maybe being long-distance frenemies in their old age.

Lilly Durona & Lotus Durona

Okay, something happened during Lotus' youth that made her decide to take that particularly baroque revenge on Lilly, and I would love to know what it was.

Count of Monte Cristo

Eugénie/Louise

I'd love to see anything with them from their first meeting to their post-canon adventures on the road or on the stage. Something that incorporates their passion for music as well as their passion for each other? D/s-flavored music lessons would be great--breathing exercises, Louise correcting Eugénie's posture/form, discipline and sexy rewards. I'd also love to see hair-brushing, bathing, dressing/undressing, either in the opulent surroundings of the Danglars home or later on the road where ladies' maids aren't available and they have to do for each other. I love the scene where Eugénie carries Louise off, and an illustration of that would be awesome--or even something more literal than in the book, with Louise actually slung over Eugénie's shoulder or something.

Edmond/Haydée

My own read on this is that Haydée never saw Edmond as a father figure, and that he only convinced himself that he saw her as a daughter because otherwise he would have to admit that he had moved on from Mercédès, and moving on isn't really his Thing. If you wanted to write something from before the main action of the book, or missing scenes, I'm happy to have their feelings unconsummated and unacknowledged--in fact, I would love a good old-fashioned pining fic from Haydée's point of view. Or something where they comfort each other for their respective traumas, and discover that they're both looking for revenge on the same person? Post-canon, maybe they have an opportunity to indulge in their taste for dressing up and playing roles when it's not in pursuit of any deadly goal. For art, anything with fancy clothes or that emphasizes their physical contrasts. Or else, them looking like a classy 19th-century ad for drug paraphernalia?

Dear Creator,

Hi! Thank you for signing up to make something for me about some of my favorite characters in a series I love!

Things I like in general:

For art, illustrations of moments in the books; the kind of character portrait where a lot of thought has gone into details of clothing, hairstyle, etc even if nothing in particular is happening; loose sketchy comick-y things that illustrate a character moment or interaction. And anything in between, really--there's not a lot of art of these books in general and these characters in particular, so just seeing any visual representation of them makes me happy.

For fic, I like silly fluff, I like action, adventures, and worldbuilding, and I like smut (although, in this case, I mean Nahuseresh/Kamet, not Ina & Eurydice). I also like dark fic of all kinds: violence, character death, betrayal, consent issues sexual and otherwise, bad things happening to characters I like AND characters I like doing bad things. Bring it on! Feel free to bring in whatever other characters from the series or original characters that you think would make the story better, as long as the focus is still on the characters I requested. Also, canon-divergence AUs. Canon-divergence AUs are great.

Do not want:

For art, anything NSFW. That sort of thing is very hit-or-miss for me, and I'd rather not find your gift unintentionally hilarious.

For fic, I sometimes get a bit anxious about reading and commenting on longer fic, so I'd rather not get anything over 5000 words or so. On the other hand, if you write a meticulously-crafted gem that is exactly 500 words long, I will be thrilled, so please don't worry about it being too short! Also, if writing sumt, I do not like sounding, infantilization, or the sort of thing where one partner doesn't know what sex is or realize they're having it. Anything else is fair game.

For either, no AUs other than canon-divergence, please.

Nahuseresh & or / Kamet

I would love to see anything with Medean world-conquering road trips while complaining about the conditions in barbaric countries! On a more serious note, I am fascinated by their character dynamic where Kamet has a certain amount of loyalty to and affection for Nahuseresh, but he also has a certain amount of resentment about his position which Nahuseresh has no clue about, while Nahusresh cares about and values Kamet, and makes some effort to shield him from his (Nahuseresh's) worst impulses, but again, has no clue about what Kamet actually thinks and feels much of the time. I would love to see this explored in any way.

If you decide to go the Nahuseresh/Kamet route (and please do if you're feeling it!), then as long as Kamet is Nahuseresh's slave, any consent is going to be dubious at best, and I'd be interested in seeing all the different ways that could go (Kamet is totally into it but also very much aware that if he wanted to say no he couldn't; Kamet is manipulating Nahuseresh; Kamet wants to say no but can't in any way that Nahuseresh would understand and/or accept). The one thing I don't want is Nahuseresh knowingly raping Kamet; that's just not how I see this relationship.

Ina & Eurydice

Ina and Eurydice strike me as being a couple of very sharp, capable, intelligent people who are very constrained by their roles in society and sheltered upbringing. I'd love to see them move beyond that during the events of A Conspiracy of Kings, anything with their adventures while Sophos is doing his own thing being a slave, or afterwards, hanging out with Eddis and possibly having their horizons broadened by living in Eddis the country for a while, which seems more egalitarian than Sounis if not perfectly so. I'd also like anything from Sophos, Ina, and Eurydice's shared childhood, or an AU where Ina and/or Eurydice end up ruling Sounis for one reason or another (like Sophos goes off to Eddis and leaves them in charge.)
