- I aten't ded, I just haven't been able to log on to tumblr for days. I miss it! I have been able to look at people's blogs, but it's not the same.

- I got the most wonderful Tuuri & Emil epistolary fic (with a few bonus letters between Emil and Lalli) for yuletide! It has friendship! Language acquisition! Background details about people's lives and jobs and preparations for the next expedition and such! You should definitely check it out if you're in the fandom and haven't yet.

- In the spirit of "Tuuri and Reynir are okay and they're going to be okay nothing's wrong what are you talking about", I did a shippy little watercolor, which you can see under the cut )

There’s this recurring motif in Diana Wynne Jones’ books where there is some sort of magic preventing the characters from thinking about a certain subject, or from talking about it, or preventing other people from believing them if they do talk about it. This is, on one hand, a convenient thing to have in one’s plotting toolkit--it addresses the “but why didn’t they just tell the adults and have them fix it” problem that crops up in children’s and YA books, and it lets you control the pacing of revelations and things like that.

More importantly, it’s often a metaphor for an abusive family situation: the feeling that some intangible malign force is preventing the characters from a) realizing something is wrong, b) talking about the thing that is wrong, and/or c) having other people understand about the thing if they do try to express it.

I mention that in order to mention this:

although you know the snow will follow by greenlily

(Yes, this is a yuletide rec. Maybe at some point I will do a proper recs post? Or maybe not. I’m not done reading yuletide yet, although I have definitely been slowing down.)

Anyway! In addition to being a very good sort of Magids fanfic, and painting a vivid if not necessarily dramatic picture of Roddy’s learning the work of the Lady of Governance and dealing with the emotional aftermath of some of the events in The Merlin Conspiracy, it uses the motif of the don’t-notice-don’t-talk-about-it magic.

Only here it’s not a metaphor for abuse--it’s a metaphor for the erasure of women’s roles in history.

And it works; it’s lovely; it fits in perfectly with the characters and world and themes of the book. And this sort of engagement with and reinterpretation of the source material is one of the things you can do with fanfic that you can’t do in any other genre.

And that’s why fic is so great.

So, after seeing Attack on Titan start to crop up all over my tumblr dashboard, after several writers I like started writing for the fandom, and several artists I like started drawing for it, after gathering that it was about heroism and self-sacrifice and brothers-and-sisters-in-arms and buckets of angst, I said to myself, self, maybe you should watch this thing, and then you could participate in this seemingly-awesome fandom.

Then I didn't do it because I find it kind of difficult to fit watching tv shows into my schedule.

But I have finally gotten around to watching the first six episodes, and, okay here is the thing.

I love protective older sisters with kid brothers, okay? It is a narrative kink of mine. Protective older sisters who are nevertheless kind of douchey to their kid brothers? YES PLEASE. So although Eren is a character type that I ordinarily could not give two fucks about, and Mikasa's character type is only marginally more interesting to me, they had this great thing that I really like going on, right?

Let me tell you how much I hated episode six!

Oh, so Mikasa's backstory is that her parents were killed and she was kidnapped by sex slavers? Really, show? Did we really have to go there? Oh, and Eren saves her? By killing two grown men with primitive weaponry when he's like, six? Because he's apparently that much of a badass, since fucking when? While she is tied up and helpless, REALLY? Okay, so she kills the third guy (after a rousing speech from Eren) but still.

. . . Oh, wait, he saved her from rapists, that means it is TRUE LOVE, doesn't it. Fuck you, show, fuck you a lot. Why did you have to promise me this thing I like and then turn it into this thing I hate?

(And the thing is, I like sibling incest! I do! But I like it when it is sibling incest, not when all the sibling feelings have been erased with the magic wand of heteronormative stereotypical gender role romance.)

I was a voracious reader as a child, but never--unlike many children who are voracious readers--an indiscriminate one. Possibly this was because I came from a very literate and fairly well-off family; there was a constant influx of new books into the house.

Also, when I was around seven or eight, I found The Color Purple on my mother's bookshelf. I was horrified, and, I recognize in retrospect, a bit turned on, which didn't actually make the experience less horrifying. I may have been cured of picking up books at random for life.

Throughout my childhood, there was a book at my grandparents' house called Inspector Saito's Small Satori. The title is memorable enough that it has been lodged in my memory for most of my life, but perhaps for the aforementioned reasons, I don't think I ever tried to read it. If I did, I certainly didn't get very far.

Also, I didn't know what satori meant. Based on the cover of the book, I decided it was something like a gazebo.

All this is to say that I have been seized with the urge to write a fic called "Asami Sato's Small Satori" but a) I feel this would be inappropriate, as I have never read the book in question, and b) I have no idea what the fic would be about.

Possibly a gazebo?

ETA: Also a good name for a fic: “Inspector Spacetime’s Small Satori”. This has the additional problem that I have never seen an episode of Community. And yet, I feel like I should do a pan-fandom series on various characters’ small satoris. It would be like a Canadian shack, in a way.

So, Pixar’s Brave.

Opinion has been divided on the issue: Either it’s going to be awesome and the art looks awesome and Merida is kickass and awesome, or it’s troubling that the only story about a girl that’s worth telling is the one where she wants to do boy stuff.

I am mostly in the first camp. Mostly because the art actually does look awesome. (Seriously, you had me at promotional tapestries.) Also, I love stories about princesses with swords (or in this case, bows and arrows) and always have; I will eat that shit with a spoon. (Also, it’s not like there aren’t a ton of Disney movies about a girl who does want to marry the prince and does marry the prince. Which is great and I love many of those too.)

But, well—why is it that “plucky girl defies her parents and rejects all suitors in order to become a warrior” is inherently interesting, and “plucky girl defies her parents and rejects all suitors in order to become a nun” is not? I guarantee you the second one has been a lot more common throughout history, in any culture where “nun” or some equivalent was a thing.

Partially I think it’s a discomfort with religion, or an inability to tell stories about religion without being evangelical, which is kind of silly—I read stories about violent people all the time while not being violent myself, why should I have to be religious in order to read about religious people?

(Disclaimer: I am religious. But there have never been Jewish nuns.)

But it’s also—if you want to tell a story about nuns, people will say, “Okay, but why should I read this? What makes it interesting?” Whereas if people are hitting each other with swords, you don’t have to ask; of course that’s interesting. (People kissing is also interesting, in the junior leagues of interesting that include “interesting to girls”.)

I dunno, maybe I should go read some literary fiction or something. But … most of it’s not very interesting?

One of my stories is finally on the first page of the Chrestomanci fandom tag on AO3 when sorted by hits.

Yes, it's Endless Knot, which has seven chapters, which is kind of cheating.

Yes, I really shouldn't be keeping track of this sort of thing.

I don't even care.

I win!

So I'm starting to think that the hunt in the story I'm writing should be a partridge shoot, and not a fox hunt.

Upside: I don't have to write horses!

Downside: I have to write guns.

Yuletide assignment: finished! Or at least ready to send to the beta as soon as I can arrange it.

Now to write this one yuletide treat I started before I got my assignment. And these two other non-yuletide-related gift fics. And maybe do some fills for the Chrestomanci tumblr fic/art thing.

Woo-hoo?

Oh hey

So I'm looking through the list of yuletide fandoms, and one of them is Beauty and the Beast (the Disney movie). Well, okay. It seems the requester only requested two characters: the Beast, and Gaston. Now, as far as I know, I am the only person on the internet to have written Beast/Gaston--I'm certainly the only person on AO3 to have done so.

I'm choosing to believe--and it doesn't seem that far-fetched--that this person is a fan of mine, and in fact liked A Different Story so much that they used one of their yuletide nominations in hopes of getting more like it (though not necessarily from me, obviously).

Score! If you're reading this, random internet person, thank you! You have warmed the cockles of my heart!

I've been reading Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, and I've been enjoying it so far, despite the author's strange quirk of referring to her protagonist as "he" even when he isn't the male character most recently mentioned. She occasionally lapses into second person; maybe she wrote the whole thing in second person and did a search-and-replace?

Anyway, the following passage had me grinning, so I wanted to share it with the rest of you:

It is time to bring the girls into the family business. Johane complains of her daughter's poor sewing, and it seems that, transferring the needle surreptitiously into her wrong hand, the child has devised an awkward little backstitch which you would be hard-pushed to imitate. She gets the job of sewing up his dispatches for the north.

So I was thinking about all the great brother&sister relationships in fandoms I like.

(No, not brother/sister relationships, you perverts.)

(Okay, so I am not immune to the attractions of brother/sister relationships either. I'm a pervert too. But you knew that!)

(But I digress.)

And then I was thinking about the festival of Raksha Bandhan, which I only know about from A Suitable Boy.

And then I was thinking, wouldn't it be awesome if there was a pan-fandom Raksha Bandhan fic exchange, celebrating "the chaste bond of love between a brother and a sister," as Wikipedia puts it?

Which is probably horribly inappropriate.

Raksha Bandhan is on August 13th this year, incidentally.

So my subconscious has been coming up with crack pairings in my sleep again. This time it was Christopher Chant/Agatha Heterodyne.

I can . . . almost see how that might work.

Also Arthur and Molly Weasley were there; I think they were Christopher and Agatha's chief henchmen. Apparently even my subconscious wouldn't dare break them up.

I haven't been around much in the past couple of weeks, and I'm not sure when I'll be back. I'm still getting my notifications and comments and such, and I'm still reading my friends page, although not every day. So I'm still here, but I'm mostly lurking for now.

If the current lull follows past trends, I will probably be writing in an entirely different fandom when I get back. (In fact, I've started fiddling with a Vorkosigan thing, I've got some ideas and also an Idea, but we'll see how it goes. Or maybe my @#%^ original fiction will start moving again, in which case I'll probably be gone longer.)

I love you all. See you around.
minutia_r: (Default)
Oh, good, you're up! What do you mean, it's two o'clock in the morning and you're going back to sleep? Don't be silly! You have a story to write!

No, not the story you've been working on for the past week. A different story. And you're going to write it backwards. Chop chop!

*sigh* Please believe me when I say, FUCK YOU, MUSE.

Gordon Korman writes the premium-grade uncut pre-slash, doesn't he?

So, I spent yesterday morning reading Schooled. I've heard that Gordon Korman's more recent work isn't a patch on his older stuff, and in some ways that's true. In places it felt more like an outline of a book than a book; in other places it felt like he was trying too hard to be Jerry Spinelli to remember to be Gordon Korman. It was published in 2007, and the setting is presumably meant to be more-or-less contemporary, but if there are such things as cell phones or computers you wouldn't know it by this book. The hippie stuff revealed more half-assed grabbing after cliches than any real understanding of 1960's counterculture. There was a major plot development where I had to suspend disbelief approximately the size of a mountain from something approximately the size of a spiderweb. There was wackiness (the scene with Cap driving the bus was particularly good) but there wasn't the katamari of wackiness that's the reason one reads Gordon Korman in the first place.

AND YET. Ever since, my brain has been busily spinning out Zach/Hugh, with a side order of unrequited Darryl/Cap. (Seriously, Gordon Korman. That Darryl chapter. How do you know where all my buttons are? It's a little embarrassing.)

I am really supposed to be working on other things. I am working on other things. I certainly don't need to be getting into a new dead fandom now. So I am not going to write it. Damn it.

Smush names

I've previously mentioned that the logical smushname for Conrad/Christopher is Conifer; yesterday it occurred to me that the logical smushname for Mordecai/Rosalie is Morosely.

How can anyone not love smushnames? They're so much fun.

In other news, I had to cut the following Tom Swifty out of chapter 3 of my WIP:

"So would having a husband who drinks all his pay when he's got small children at home," said Rosalie dryly.

I can't . . . I can't really justify that.

So apparently Christopher actually went back to school for a few days between the time he got killed and when his father took him to see Dr. Pawson.

I really did reread The Lives of Christopher Chant before starting to write my story. I really, really, did. I just somehow . . . missed that.

Well.

Um.
